Millions of bluebonnets are expected to bloom across Texas, with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center predicting an exceptional year, possibly an eight out of ten, according to a Dallas Morning News article. They say,
“Millions of bluebonnets will soon bloom across Texas, blanketing parks, pastures and highway shoulders in that most recognizable hue.
This will probably be an excellent year for bluebonnets and other wildflowers across the state, according to a forecast from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas at Austin.
“On a scale from one to 10, this year looks like it could be an eight, for bluebonnets in particular, if not even better,” said Andrea DeLong-Amaya, the center’s horticulture director.”
A superbloom, fueled by El Niño rains, is expected due to the wet season. David suggests the peak bloom might be earlier this spring, possibly aligning with an eclipse, according to a NBCDFW article. In it they say,
“A superbloom is a rare botanical phenomenon in which an unusually high number of wildflowers germinate and blossom at roughly the same time. The phenomenon is usually associated with a wet rainy season.
El Niño brought rounds of rain to North Texas through the fall and winter months.
David went on to say, “The peak is usually mid-April here. But because of the warm winter, it may be earlier this spring, perhaps coinciding with the eclipse.””
While picking bluebonnets isn’t illegal, it’s essential to avoid trespassing and disrupting their lifecycle. DeLong-Amaya emphasizes respect for nature and others’ enjoyment of the flowers.
