The Mexican, a spacious, art-filled restaurant in Dallas’ Design District, opens in a renovated 15,000 sq ft former storage facility, offering high-end Northern Mexican cuisine and a cigar bar, according to a Dallas Morning News article. They say,
“A meandering, art-filled restaurant named The Mexican opens March 11, 2022 on Turtle Creek Boulevard in the Dallas Design District.
The building, a massive 15,000 square feet, was once Don Henley’s storage facility. After careful and quiet renovation by a group of American and Mexican stakeholders, the restaurant is ready for action as a high-end dinner spot and cigar bar serving Northern Mexican cuisine.
The interiors were done by Paulina Moran, a Cancun-based designer.”
The Mexican’s lavish design, costing $11.5 million, sets a record for Dallas restaurant expenses, exceeding $1,000 per square foot, with 11,000 sq ft indoors and 4,000 sq ft of patios, according to a Dallas Morning News article. In it they say,
“The Mexican’s $11.5 million construction and design cost makes it one of the biggest restaurant expenses in Dallas history. It cost more than $1,000 per square foot. The sprawling restaurant has 11,000 square feet indoors and 4,000 square feet of patios. Let’s look inside.”
The Mexican, named after Roberto González Alcalá, earned the title of Most Beautiful Restaurant in North America by Prix Versailles. Its design and construction cost totaled $11.5 million, according to a Dallas Morning News article. It reports,
“Indeed, the 2-year-old restaurant — named for Mexican-born businessman Roberto González Alcalá — is the Most Beautiful Restaurant in North America, according to the international architectural awards by Prix Versailles in November 2023. The Mexican was the only restaurant in the United States named, and the award turned eyes back on Dallas and its glittery newcomer.
It’s but one in a long list of pretty, pricey restaurants that have opened in Dallas in the past few years. But did The Mexican put more money in than most?
Yes: The Mexican cost an incredible $11.5 million in design and construction, Hicks said in a series of interviews. That price tag includes construction, architectural design, tile, flooring, furniture and more. The wallpaper alone cost $100,000. The owners hired CancĂşn designer Paulina Morán, whose budget was $5.3 million.”
Despite its lavish design, The Mexican offers dining prices comparable to or below Dallas steakhouses and sushi spots, averaging around $90 per person before gratuity.
