Urbano Cafe in East Dallas, facing closure, finds saviors in brothers Pasha and Sina Heidari, preventing co-founder Mitch Kauffman’s initial plan to shut it down in January 2024, according to a Dallas Morning News article. In it they say,
“Old East Dallas restaurant Urbano Cafe will not close after all.
Co-founder Mitch Kauffman had announced that his tiny BYOB restaurant would serve its last dinners in January 2024, but Dallas brothers Pasha Heidari and Sina Heidari offered to buy it and keep it open.
“I think it’s best left to somebody younger than me,” Kauffman said.”
After 15 years, owners Mitch and Kristen Kauffman close Urbano Cafe and Two Doors Down in East Dallas, citing it’s time for a new chapter, according to a Dallas Observer article. As per the report,
“Owners Mitch and Kristen Kauffman opened their first concept, Urbano Paninoteca, on McKinney Avenue in 2002, before moving the concept to this East Dallas space in 2008. Urbano Cafe and sibling restaurant, Two Doors Down, are closing after 15 years. From a Facebook post, “(…) it’s just time for us to move on to our next chapter.” The last day of service will be Jan. 27.
As a BYOB spot, Urbano filled any number of niches for Dallas wine drinkers. Bringing your own wine can cut the cost of dinner by one-third, given the foolish markups for most restaurant wine, and customers can enjoy what they brought instead of taking potluck with a wine list designed to boost revenue instead of quality. BYOB is more common in many parts of the country, but Texas’ liquor laws prohibit most restaurants from offering the service.”
The handover of Urbano Cafe to new owners, the Heidari brothers, is set for Feb. 18, 2024. They aim to maintain the same neighborhood restaurant feel and operating hours.
